I previously covered the basics on how to install the Call Quality Dashboard (CQD) PowerShell module and perform a basic query. This article is a follow-up on how to perform more advanced queries to extract the Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business Online data in your tenant.

Microsoft Teams will eventually become the standard collaboration tool for Office 365, replacing Skype for Business Online. In the meantime, you may need to manage how your end users will use both products, as well as how to transition fully to Teams. This article will discuss what options are available to you, how to manage this on a per-user and tenant basis, and what is on the roadmap.

Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business Online are both capable of federation, which allows people to contact other users outside their company. However, configuring these Office 365 options the same way as Lync or Skype for Business Server on premises can lead to unexpected results.

Earlier this month, Microsoft released a much anticipated feature: common area phones for Skype for Business Online. Common area phones are devices that are located in areas like lobbies, lounges, or meeting rooms. These phones differ in that they do not have a specific user assigned to them, and they require different sign-in capabilities. With the new common area phone licenses, this can now be accomplished in Skype for Business Online. This po...

I have ran into a particular issue a few times when activating phone numbers in Skype for Business Online Phone System. If you don’t look in the right place, you might be left scratching your head as to what the problem is. The user will be assigned a phone number using the Set-CsOnlineVoiceUser command but will not be able to make or to receive calls over the PSTN. In these cases I have looked at, the user’s licensing is all correct. If you run...

I recently ran into an issue with my homelab that took several months to figure out. Ok, I didn't troubleshoot non-stop, but nonetheless it took me several months to figure out what was going on and come to a solution. This blog post is written to step through the issue and hopefully help other people in the future (and maybe find another solution).

Here's the scenario. I have a single server running Windows Server 2016 and Hyper-V. On this s...

By default in Skype for Business, any two users (internal or external) who can communicate with each other can also see each other’s presence information. Some organizations may want to give their end users control on who they want to see their presence information. This can be configured through a feature called Privacy Mode, and this blog article will cover how to configure it and what it means from an end user’s perspective.

This past week Microsoft made good on their promise from Ignite 2017 to release an updated Skype for Business Online Network Assessment Tool. In addition to performing a basic network performance test, the tool now makes connectivity checks out to Skype for Business Online to ensure that no network  devices are blocking any IP addresses, ports, or protocols. Check out the video below for more information on the updates and a few demonstrations.

One of the nicest features released this year for Skype for Business Online is the ability to create normalization rules and group them into dial plans. Normalization rules allow replicating behavior from legacy PBXs, such as extension dialing. It can also accommodate other dialing habits, such as 7-digit dialing for local calls. Right now, administration of normalization rules is only available through PowerShell (expected to change any day now...

Three years ago I published one of my first blog articles detailing how to clean up leftover Lync and Skype for Business user accounts, and it has become one of my most viewed posts. Included at the bottom of that post is a small script example to show how to perform this task across multiple servers. I have a version of a longer script to do all this, but it was one of the first major PowerShell scripts I wrote, and, to be honest, was not that g...

Following up from my last post discussing how to troubleshoot audio calls using Call Analytics, this time I'm going to focus on some of the configuration options available. In order to access the Settings and Sites options in Call Analytics, you must be a Global Administrator or Skype for Business Tenant Administrator.

Settings has one sub-menu for Permissions, which allows for role-based access control (sorely missing from the Skype for Business...

Investigating audio issues in Skype for Business is different in Office 365 versus the on-premises server product. In the on-premises world, if you're lucky, the monitoring reports are available to look at the call or conference data. If not, you'll need to gather client logs from the affected end user and search for the vqreportevent event to look for clues (hope you can sort through XML). Luckily in the Skype Online, this is all made easie...

During the Configure Custom Policies in Skype for Business Online and Microsoft Teams session at Ignite 2017, Christian Burke presented a case study for analyzing and troubleshooting poor call quality using the Call Quality Dashboard. One of the tools he used was a custom PowerShell module written by Jason Shave from the Skype for Business Customer Experience & Deployment team at Microsoft. This module includes a single command that extracts usag...

While looking through the registry at some Skype for Business client settings, I came across something an entry I had not seen before: the Skype for Business Feedback Tool. In this post I will go over what this tool is and how to configure the options for it.

The Skype for Business Feedback Tool allows reporting a problem or sending feedback directly back to Microsoft about your experience with the product. The feedback is collected through a sepa...
